Don't Judge a Book By its Title. But an Editor Might.

For Fiction Friday, I share with you a few of the books I've been intending to read for a good long while. I tend to get around to reading books a little late . . . like at least 10 years late, usually. I think they multiply on my shelf while I'm sleeping.

Try to pretend you've never heard of these books. Which would intrigue you most by title alone?

  • THE MUSICIAN'S DAUGHTER
  • OPHELIA
  • THE INDIGO NOTEBOOK
  • THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH
  • THE LOST SUMMER
  • THE RUNNING DREAM
  • THE FOX INHERITANCE
  • HATTIE EVER AFTER

At the nonfiction workshop I went to last week, author John Bytheway emphasized the importance of title in catching an editor's interest--something I honestly hadn't given much thought. I figured the marketing department would change my title anyway. I hadn't viewed my working title as one of only a few reasons an editor might finish reading my query.

What are some of your favorite titles and why? What do you think makes a catchy title?

Definitely not Harry Potter - I remember avoiding it for a long time because it didn't sound interesting. Good thing my friend convinced me to try it :)

I picked up Forest of Hands and Teeth solely on its title. I had to know what that was about.

I love the title A Curse as Dark as Gold. It's probably my favorite one ever. I bought the book based on the title and the cover.

True...(Sort Of) sounds interesting. Catchy title for sure, and makes you curious about the book.

Mmm, titles can be so fun. One of my favorites is This is What Happy Looks Like.
